“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matthew 6:33 KJV
The headlines read, “Mother’s Tough Choice.” The article went on to explain a terrible decision one mother was forced to make after her car plummeted into a fast moving river. She attempted to remove her two young children from their car seats and to get them out of the car. As the three left the sinking car the strong current grabbed the three and swept them down stream. With a child in each arm it was impossible for the young mother to grab the ropes being thrown to her by people trying to help. As they moved farther down stream, they began to approach a large water fall. The mother with little choices left let go of both her children and grabbed the safety line, saving herself from certain death.
Was this mother selfish or heroic? What would you have done facing a similar situation, would you have held onto your kids and died with them as you went over the great falls?
Before you pass judgment on the young mother be sure to know the full story. You see the river is life, the water fall is death, the lines being thrown to her is the gospel, and her children are anything she holds dearer to her heart than the gospel, Christ. To let go of her two children and to grab onto Christ, was not an act of selfishness it was a great leap of faith; it was not only necessary to be saved but it was also her kids only hope. You see, the story does not end here, because after the mother grabbed onto the rope, Christ, her children followed her example and the entire family was saved.
What are you holding onto that keeps you from fully grabbing onto Jesus? What is in your hands?, your family, material things, an unbelieving spouse, doubts, worries, money, the need to keep up with others?
The words of Christ are clear, let go of these things and seek Christ first, and then, these other things will come to you.
This is a new year, filled with thousands of new decisions, what will you choose? You can continue to reach and grab for the things of this world, which will not last or you can choose Jesus, a new and better life.
God Bless You!
