Loving Father

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love."
1 John 4:18 NIV

I used to know a girl that loved her father so much; she would do anything to please him. She played sports and competed in things she did not even enjoy, because she knew her dad loved it. She was a good athlete but not the best and her dad could not handle it. He told her that if she were not on the A team she would have to drop out. No child of his was ever going to finish anywhere other than first. He would tell her that if she did not place first in shows, the animal she was showing would be sold. The pressure was more than she could handle and all the while her father would tell her he loved her.

Many people view God this same way. They think that God puts demands on them to be a certain sort of person that they could never attain. They feel as if God is standing over them, just waiting for them to screw up so He can show them that He is God and that they are worthless. This perception could not be further from the truth! God is a God of love, He is waiting and watching, but He will be there to welcome you, to celebrate with you, if you come in first or last. His love is not based on your abilities, on your skills but on His.

He is a God of love and compassion, not to be feared but to be relied upon in times of joy and struggle. He gave his Son for you, to show how much He loves you, why be afraid?

If you have ever been to a youth sporting event you have probably witnessed the parent, yelling and screaming for their child to work harder, to be more aggressive, etc. Have you seen the fear as this parent rants and raves like a wild lion? Then there is the parent that sits with a smile, like a little lamb, if their child makes the goal or misses they yell, “Good Job, Keep Trying.” This is our Heavenly Father, the “lamb,” filled with love and power, yet never pushing, just supporting. If you feel you are failing Him tell Him, ask for strength, and He will give it.                                                                                          Pastor Chris & His Family
